reputation is different from character, basically, and bad character can produce good reputation (many such cases) so you gotta check for that

btw, this is among the various reasons why it's wholly unrealistic to expect people *not* to talk about you behind your back. the market incentives are too strong (and that applies to social spheres as well) it's gonna happen, better to make your peace with that

y'all should know that I have specific individuals in mind when I say that there are people who are big on twitter, praised ostentatiously by their peers, who also have dirt reputations as employers, colleagues, friends, etc. you only hear the latter in private
