another small synthesis thread.
inputs:
* @St_Rev calling modern universities "madrasas"
* the economics concept of lottery professions, e.g. music, where 1 in a thousand makes big money https://www.litcharts.com/lit/freakonomics/chapter-3-why-do-drug-dealers-still-live-with-their-moms …
* David Friedman's "Legal Systems Very Different From Ours"

8/ Race grievance studies? Feminism? For ever one B̶r̶u̶c̶e̶ ̶S̶p̶r̶i̶n̶g̶s̶t̶e̶e̶n̶ Cornell West who wins the lottery, we get 20,000 students who fail to win the lottery, but are incentivized to self-radicalize in the madrasa.

9/ Think about how many people call themselves "activists" and who are running around trying to push codes of conducts, trying to infiltrate publishers, trying to - in short - destroy western civilization. Every one of them is working for free, hoping to graduate to paid level.

11/ All you have to do to get tenure, Winston, is strap the rat face cage on 400 other people. Wait - did I say "get tenure" ? I meant - have a CHANCE of getting tenure. /exeunt

12/ Picked up Friedman's book after work, read one page further...and, of course, he had already identified exactly the point I made above. Sigh.

people say "elite overproduction", but it's really "overproduction of candidates for being the elites' favored servants" policy goal is to ensure that this class is always looking over its shoulder, more in internal competition than solidarity
-
this breaks down eventually when you overproduce /too much/, and there are more no-hopers with bitter hate for the entire system than there are people who still aspire to winning at which point things explode, basically

Studying English is not in any way studying left wing politics. If anything many of my classes were spent reading stodgy modernists and wading through their weird traditionalist hangups. And everyone knew academic employment is totally broken, so we were there to our own ends.
