I recall reading about something like this (maybe exactly this?) and the secret was that it’s low-doses of some fairly unpleasant drug popular in Russia that hasn’t gotten around to being outlawed here yet.

A reply from a locked friend, dunno if you can see this or not If you're giving up alcohol you probably don't want to replace it with this garbage https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phenibut pic.twitter.com/tz3BtUfjVc

> If you're giving up alcohol you probably don't want to replace it with this garbage Having known several alcoholics very well, and watching their ups and downs, I'd go further and suggest that the win is: "If you're giving up alcohol you probably don't want to replace it"

eh, I think that's trivial and saccharine (which is your point / joke), but also there's something there addictions can't be trivially stamped out but often have to be replaced ; I think replacements that are more distant analogs are better than closer analogs >>>

and the replacements are kind of sucky too (e.g. "now I'm addicted to running - it only takes 5 hours per week to give me 2% of the high I used to get!"), but it's a matter of looking through all the features of the potential replacements

20 years ago when I lost a lot of weight (the nth-of-m times) I found I needed to find a replacement for "self indulgent treat". Renting movies filled the niche kind of OK.

Wisdom here. It's good to redirect a habit you want to lose into a habit you don't mind having; easier to map one habit to another than to drop a habit altogether.

advice from dog training books: you can't train a dog OUT of a behavior; you can only train it IN TO a different behavior. If the dog barks when the mailman approaches, retrain it to sit and wait for a treat. etc. Applied to myself: a hard day warrants a treat ...rent a movie.
