Cities are bad tho. I mean, yes, economically division of labor is great. But cities are IQ shredders, reduce population, enact anti liberty laws, create Talebian fragility, and mold people into hapless bugmen who use "brunch" as a verb. https://twitter.com/_TamaraWinter/status/1191524594030538752 …

2/ * cities create division of labor * division of labor is great, BUT * specialization is for insects * bugmen are insects * cities are for states to make production transparent * cities are population shredders * as they were in Bronze Age (Against the Grain, James C Scott)

3/ * cities / division of labor is not good in and of itself, but are good for the elites (you need to put 5 million people in one place if you want a 3 star Michellin restaurant ...AND have their secret unlisted number for reservations)

4/ so basically Robert Heinlein / James C Scott / BAP synthesis: * a human being should be able to build a house / butcher a pig / start a fire * ...because doing so allows him to escape the bugman cities where he is countable and taxable by the elites

5/ cities are for gay men who brunch, barren women who collect handbags, snivelling policy "wonks" and other castrati retainers bronze age / Heinleinian heroes must forgo specialization and thus economic peak development (no homo economicus here) in order to escape into Zomia

Does this imply forsaking everything that (today at least) is only possible because of cities? If not, have you escaped? Or could we build computers, publishing platforms for BAP, long weekends with your bros roasting pigs, without cities as we know them?

I like being able to travel to the city as a tourist to sample its delights and then go home. DO NOT LIKE said city to have political or social authority over me and mine. 1/2

Suburban/@wrathofgnon counterpoint: Low density cities allow for 1. walking ability to groceries, parks, and access to services at a humane (not-bugman) level, without spend a LOT of driving time 2. Access to peers for kids for activities, organized sports, faith, frienships

In 20mins of driving, I have: high-quality gym, hockey association for boy from yrs 5-18+, (or soccer/basketball), two decent high schools, low crime, a provincial park, transit for trips to zoo or downtown (where parking sucks). Must be an optimal density out there
