occasionally i see people talking confidently about things that i know a lot about that they (by revelation) dont know anything about really smart people i respect sort of a gell mann but for everyone oh well

So a super, super common thing in my circles is to say, "I'm not an artist, I'm a painter.". I think it's mostly meant to short-circuit the "well, what is art" conversation, and replace it with something less pretentious and more objective.
