4/ and I realized that, ow, wow, this is actually a trope, and we see it in movies all the time, and it is "expensive signalling". Two guys, both LOOK buff, who's tougher? Hard to say ...unless they both take injuries, then if one keeps going and one doesn't, we've learned.

5/ I bet this is deep in the human psyche - both men and women like to see men who have injuries but push on (for similar yet distinct reasons). Women obviously want to mate with / be protected by tough guys, men want comrades who can hold their own.
