Yep. Stupid, short-sighted decision. Could have saved ourselves vast amounts spent building ISS (originally as US-only “Space Station Freedom”) from scratch and advanced our own space program.

I loved reading the books with the diagrams of Skylab as an elementary school kid. Learning of its demise was sad.

I'm still angry about how the Soyuz has been in use since the late 60s, but rather than adapt existing Apollo designs for low-Earth-orbit, NASA has reinvented the wheel again aaaaaand we haven't launched humans ourselves for nearly a decade.
