False negative statements about people hurt not just them, but society via misallocations. Which is why we let sue for defamation. concur, but in the same way that a small group of police officers can mobilize on the issue of police salaries, and the other 99% of citizens who pay taxes won't mobilize to fight them bc the individual harm to them is small, I expect that victims of slander can mobilize for laws
