2/ The original plan was to have the shuttle boost Skylab into a higher orbit. It's interesting to think about that alt history. Would we have kept skylab in operation for the last 40 years, and built Space Station Freedom / Space Station Alpha / The ISS around that core?

3/ I mean, yes, tons of stuff on skylab wouldn't have lasted nearly that long. Batteries, solar, etc. etc. etc. but the sheer VOLUME of the third stage wet lab concept - 361 cubic meters in one launch vs about the same in the entire ISS across 14 or so pressurized modules
