Au pair is our plan because very high earnings potential/life happiness for Orthonormalmiss (who as we know is not median! not claiming universal here). But in many cases, cheaper for women to take care of kids.

Well, mixture of things--we can see that historically (to my knowledge), it doesn't seem to have had a significant impact when kids were partially raised by servants, given sufficient investment by parents on top of this.

Second, there is a degree of personal fulfillment. If the outcome for the kid's happiness has a minimum change, the outcome for her/my fulfillment should be maximized.

To make more clear what I'm thinking, so that you can at least yell at me for what I mean: What is the cutoff where additional investment yields additional happiness that's not worth it? For example, if you triple your time/money investment into your kid for 1% more happiness...
