I grew up on the internet of the early 2000s. You could discuss anything, with anyone while being whatever you chose to be. Identities were swapped frequently and with mirth. It was freedom and anonymity, but it was also escapism. This internet will never return. 1/2

I never really resonate when I hear others talk about bulletin boards. It was a scene I never really got into. But when you put it like this, I see that I experienced the anonymity-Internet too, but as a more childlike thing. Which makes sense if I’m younger than my peers!

I discussed politics, religion, and how to game the in-game economy on Neopets, then Runescape, NationStates, and Gaia Online, all while also effectively playing dress-up of my character or pets or country. I didn’t ever experience a bulletin board that wasn’t attached to a game.

The anonymity/deanonymity transition just seemed like an extension of growing up, because the anonymity was so closely tied with childhood... but perhaps the transition was more a fact about the structure of the Internet itself

And now it is slightly less confusing to me that Gen Z uses TikTok. They use their real faces instead of concocting elaborate avatars?? I thought avatars were a part of childhood!!

Given how many people I know who use avatars and anonymity this seems like a weird take to me. What happened wasn't that the anonymous internet died. The nonymous internet just became huge in addition to it.

The attrition rates for anonymity are severe. It has also become stigmatized.

It was never not stigmatized by normies.

yeah, I remember editorials literally 20 years ago about "it's time for the internet to grow up and use true names"

As a kid growing up being anonymous and having the freedom to say anything you might want seemed so natural. I perhaps didn't percieve adult suspicion. This freedom was however anomalous.
