I'm fine with offering someone advice that something is unwise. I'm fine with telling them that's it sinful, although I would expect them to ignore that if they don't share my moral code. I have a very high bar that someone would have to violate before telling them it's wrong.

Don't eat bacon, it's unhealthy. - Eh, I'll take the risk, but thanks. Don't eat bacon, it's sinful. - [shrug] I'm not Jewish. Don't eat bacon, it's cruel to animals. - Okay, now we can discuss the ethics of eating meat.

Don't eat bacon, I don't like it. - That's not even a topic worth considering, let alone having a discussion about.

Using my framing - 'likely to have severe negative consequences' isn't the same as 'wrong'. Unless you mean '... for other people', in which case it could arguably be wrong, but I'd want it to be clearly wrong before labeling it as such and bringing society's condemnation.

so your stance is basically "the concept of 'morality' is a trigger for me and you shouldn't say it" ? 1% teasing / mocking, 99% srs question

Not at all! I merely think we need to have high bars to clear before we declare that some particular moral principle is worth enforcing using all the scorn and shame society can bring to bear. In particular, I want to distinguish one person's morality from the common morality.

I respect your view that extramarital sex is immoral. I hope you recognize that others don't share that view, and that like it or not, We Live In A Society with others. Hence, my use of the terms 'sinful' and 'wrong' (in the context of this thread).

of course I do! if I didn't recognize that, I wouldn't have any need to discuss the topic. How much time do I spent trying to convince you that water is wet and gravity pulls us down? > We Live In A Society with others. meaning what, exactly? in this conversation?

>meaning what, exactly? in this conversation? Meaning that one shouldn't expect or demand that other people will use shame to try to enforce the moral standards that you would like them to.
