Sure. I'm arguing that ticks will breed in a field until every deer is infected with ticks ... but they can't breed beyond that, because their food supply is not infinite. Likewise with single mothers / bastard / fatherless children. They leach economic surplus off the host civ

Thanks. That's what I thought. I guess I was confused bc according to your analogy I'd expect some correlation b/t economic surplus & the rate of those children. (Colombia can "feed" less "parasites" than the US, but has nonetheless higher rate of them.

I'd argue that in a US time series, we see more of it as we get richer. Perhaps the same in Columbia? Cross cultural comparisons are tricky because of thousands of other factors.
