Priming canvases got ten times easier, cheaper, and more enjoyable when I realized that, instead of applying the primer with the dainty little palette knife from the art supply store, I could just go to Lowe's and get a drywall knife.

Interesting question, not certain. The oil primer I use has a heavy, roughly wet-mud consistency, and I want it pretty smooth, so I've been going with a taping knife.
