trying to read Renee Girard's "Things Hidden Since the Foundation of the World" as background for the philosophy of a character in Ari 3 and 4, and - whew - I dunno, lads. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0804722153 … https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ren%C3%A9_Girard#Girard's_thought …

3/ Yep, I've already been thinking along those lines. This also complicates a plot line - I want to have character X kill character Y, but if X believes in Giardian scapegoat / sacrificism, doesn't that actually EMPOWER Y's faction over coming decades? https://twitter.com/relicn0cer/status/1183758257506177024 …

4/ ...but ... that might be OK. Ari 3 and 4 have one major thread where character X is taking counsel from a half dozen people (Girardian self, Rationalist, Catholic Priest, Ancap, etc.) and doing a Hegellian synthesis. Perhaps he rejects Giardism ? Pondering...

5/ Also, there is a big sacrifice elsewhere in the book, which plays very well into the Giardian theme that I'm pondering... anyway, still hoping to get the book done before we reach c. 2080 where it's set ...

8/ derp! my bad! A Freudian slip is when you SAY what you're really thinking; what's it called where I MISREAD someone else's words and reveal what I'm really thinking?https://twitter.com/skirtsnhose/status/1183761412889272320 …

10/ Holy crap, I found EXACTLY the thing I need / the thing I was hoping to find / the thing that resonates with EXACTLY the twist I already had planned. Yes, this is going to work. I'm getting hugely excited to finish up this contract in ~ 2 weeks and writing Ari 3 & 4.

With Girard, it's very possibly the latter.

In my case, I always choose to assume the latter. I may be wrong, but it makes me happy.

Also, my general approach is that philosophy and criticism about literary, societal, and cultural matters is all garbage. Pontification and self-delusion that makes no testable predictions and which can reach any conclusion one wishes to reach.
