probably also worth noting my emergency fund at this point is substantially a fairly vast set of untapped credit (card) lines things would be tight if I suddenly lost my job because of fixed costs; and I really Really don't want to tap retirement funds source of some anxiety

I was just repeating eigenrobots words. BTW what makes you say that we have mediocre healthcare? I can't compare bcs I never lived outside Europe but the general opinion is that cost effectiveness in US is worse. Is this wrong?

3k is like my entire monthly budget, and my area is hardly cheap.

That's including car, housing, utilities, internet food, charitable giving, etc. I'm not sure I'd know what to do with 3K after housing and utilities. Save faster for a house down payment I guess.
