Anyone have a take on the PG&E shutdown that isn't just jabbering about capitalism and climate change? Also, five days would suck but after Hurricane Andrew my mom had no power for three months, also her roof was missing. So y'know this shit isn't unheard of in ancient days.

I remember the fires from last year and would rather have a blackout.

+1 but it's ridiculous that a blackout is needed (should I assume that's true?) to prevent the fires

On the one hand, I agree, on the other hand, there’s not *that* much that can be done about blown branches downing power lines. Burying the ones which can be buried would be a good start...

another Dumb Thing is that California is one of the states with mandatory grid interconnects for solar, meaning folks with solar installations will also be without power during the blackout.

" folks with solar installations will also be without power" wait wut im not sure i grasp this; they ban solar installations that only feed single units, or something? Like schoolmarm, "if you brought gum, you have to give everyone some" type thing?

Basically, yes: if you have solar panels they have to be grid connected. No grid, no power. So without batteries you’re out of luck even with plenty of sun.

This is not my understanding of how grid connect works.

Based off of the technology. I have researched grid connect boxes. Maybe there are multiple types tho?
