It's been a while, but I remember getting very into the worldbuilding and setup at the start, and the sense of bitter disappointment when I realize Pullman was just developing that into a spittle-flecked rant about how much he hates Catholics :/

I wholly endorse John Wright's analysis that in the latter books he lets the chip on his shoulder override what the story needed. ...but, darn it, Golden Compass was just such a great adventure story. It deserved better sequels.

I believe his phrasing was that Pullman “forced his muse to play the harlot”, and I have never heard a more accurate description. The later books are haunted by the feeling that they should have been telling a much different and much better story.

The books' final message, though: God doesn't exist because horny twelve-year-olds. So profound.

Strong agree. A thin film of sneering yuck over the whole series I was never able to dispel.
