12/ So Africans are poor and violent in the Chicago, in Sweden, in South Africa, in Kenya, in the Congo, in France, in Washington DC, in Haiti, etc., but you assert confidently that this is "NOT" anything relating to race? Fascinating.https://twitter.com/manforoneseason/status/1181555034368004097 …

my problem with this is that you look at the history of black people in the us - from violent abudction and slavery to sharecropping and the failure of reconstruction and the klan and jim crow and redlining and then mass incarceration - and you blame ‘africanness’

look I’m obviously not suggesting that on an interpersonal level you should just shrug your shoulders and blame your ancestry

but the suggestion that disproportionate rates of crime among black communities for eg are the result of systematic personal failure (caused by some innate to ‘africanness’) instead of structural racism and the lingering, accumulated effects of history is fkn stupid

the thing that’s stupid about this thread is just how quickly the statistical observation that x group is more likely to do y thing is followed by ‘and instead of this being due to any sociological or economic reasons it’s definitely to do with the fact they have african genes’

yeah @manforoneseason you have to understand that calling this argument "racism" doesn't hurt anyone's feelings or make us change our mind on anything
that's just a tribal taboo word ; it has no power here
explain how we're WRONG, not how we're TABOO

oh mate i believe you. im not saying it because, as you seem to patronisingly assume, i believe it’ll scare you into agreeing with me. im saying it is racist because i believe it to be racist
