2/ Yes, this is sane: when you dislike an authors politics, punish yourself by not reading great books.https://twitter.com/JohnFCross/status/1176951818657632256?s=19 …

3/ I despise the politics of China Mieville, Ken Macleod, and Iain Banks. Those are also three of my favorite authors. Because they're REALLY GOOD WRITERS. What a fool I'd be to abjure their books because of their opinions on policy.
To each their own, but MacLeod's rant in defense of Stalin's atrocities completely destroyed any interest I had in ever reading anything by him. There's "has dumb opinions" bad, and then there's "literally morally worse than a Holocaust denier" bad.
Ok, now I'm going to defend MacLeod. He is (or was?) a Trot, but I don't think he's EVER defended Stalin's atrocities. Link? Cc @amendlocke

I was thinking more along the lines of this, it seems the original is no longer on your site but I can confirm that the quotations of you here match my memories: https://marxism.livejournal.com/97963.html
And I know you backed down, but a man in his 40s publishing an essay about how Hitler's extermination of European Jewry was a necessary and righteous measure to protect Western Civilization from Bolshevism- or it's equivalent-is not exactly a minor youthful indiscretion.
Trying to rationalize the Yezhovschina was inexcusable, and I deeply regret doing so. But to the equation of Communists with Nazis, well - a chacun son boche, mes amis. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHKjOl9ocR0 …
It seems to me that your argument that Stalin could be forgiven for killing tens of millions if that's what it took to be ready for the Nazi onslaught ... could defend half of the Nazi policies as well (Stalin is coming!) [ fwiw, I am tempted by your utilitarian argument >>
and it's what I use to explain and justify 50% of Pinochet's actions (the other 50% were unnecessary / cruel / wrong, and can not be justified) ]
