OK, TELL ME WHERE HE'S WRONG: "I always had some monarchist sympathies, but I went full turncoat when I saw how moronically people were treating politics after 2016 and realized that our current system was breeding a bunch of nutjobs."https://www.theguardian.com/global/2019/oct/01/the-rise-of-monarchism …

Assuming that monarchist authoritarianism doesn't breed nut jobs. We have the entire running history of Europe acting as a counterfactual. Unless "guaranteed inbred nut jobs" are supposed to be superior to run-of-the-mill nut jobs

The King need not be hereditary.

Then how does it differ meaningfully from a despotism by contract? That is, after all, what monarchy is. And also, if you're willing to let someone else control your life, I can do that right now for very low fees.

I like your style, man, but monarchy does not equal despotism--let us consider Russia 1914 v. Russia 1920.

Let's put it a different way. How much of your life are you willing to sign over to me, personally, via limited power of attorney? That is, after all, what monarchy is about. It's about someone else making decisions for your life.

it's already the case that maybe 30-40% of our lives are handed over to government the question is "right now you get to vote ; would you give up that right if it reduced the percent from 30-40 to X? For what X?" I'd give up voting to reduce gov by half - trivially.

Except in the process of giving up voting, you would increase the percent of your life handed over to government. One less decision you get to make that someone else does in your stead. The same number of decisions are going to get made, you just won't be involved.

if we could codify a max tax rate of 10%, but lose voting, how does that increase the percent of life handed to the government?

And how, pray tell, will you enforce that max tax rate? You can't do it by voting for people who will agree to it, since you have removed voting. The people with guns and tanks are paid by those who collect the taxes. You could have a rebellion, but then you don't have a gov't.

how do we enforce things now? how do we enforce the second amendment? Answer is: we don't. The gov violates the 2A with impunity, and there's nothing we can do. ...so what good is voting?

Sure we do. We have oppositional branches of government. Congress is pretty useless for this purpose, but the courts are where it's supposed to be fought. And that fight is occurring. It just doesn't happen overnight. And sometimes you lose.

I have long been a supporter of the phrase that "if voting was effective, it would be illegal; if voting was ineffective, it would be illegal." Just because you can't imagine how to get something done doesn't mean it can't be done or won't be done.
