Was thinking the other day: what if one was granted immortality...and every other human disappeared? What level of technology is sustainable for one person, working 60 hrs/week? 21st c. for a few decades. 1920 for a few centuries. >>>

E.g. I think one could make biodiesel or producer gas, and run a tractor off of that, and use it to split and carry the logs for the producer gas, and plant and harvest the corn and potatoes, etc But after maybe 300 years all the hydraulic lines are rotted, all the old engines >

That one could find in the first few decades have been used up, and all the others have rusted. So then you fall back to...what? 1800? Blacksmithing isn't too hard and there's infinite steel. You can keep forging plow blades. But...man, the work, just to hold steady at 1800!

And I'm not sure that one person, sans division of labor, could do it. I bet you wear through a complete set of clothes every year, so you've got to harvest, spin, and weave your own flax (or wool). Etc.

Don't think so. I think you lose electricity in < 500 years, bc you lose diesel engines. Technological "infrastructure pyramid" is far too tall.https://twitter.com/shlevy/status/1178286021785640962?s=19 …

Thus the "kind of" qualifier. I've seen the issue in spec fiction on the community basis incidentally address (Stirling's Nantucket). Flint's was only time I've seen the characters really look at the issue through the gear down lens.
