It's not hard. If people's misplaced belief in unicorns was the root of centuries of human conflict and retarded human progress he'd probably be powerfully anti-unicorn.

You think that religion is the root of conflict? Is the corollary that without religion, there'll be less or no conflict?

It's the root of many conflicts throughout history. Certainly not all. Scarcity accounts for most conflict. Wars have many roots, but horrific violence and genocide almost require an ideological element as justification. When God wills it you can justify almost anything.

were the Roman wars religiously motivated? Nazi wars? Imperial Japanese? Franco-Prussian? Vietnam? Korea?

Imperial Japan? In some ways, yes. The belief in the divinity of the Emperor was a big deal. Most of what you list were not religiously motivated. As I said scarcity is the real cause of most war. The 30 years war, muslim conquest and domination of india, Tamerlane... yes.

you said "belief in unicorns was the root of centuries of human conflict" but it really wasn't ideology is always used to JUSTIFY wars that are chosen for other reasons

Would you deny that ideologies can also drive conflict without another reason?

Given that ideologies are omnipresent (there has never been a society without one, nor can there be), I think the question is a bad one. Do hands drive conflict? Every conflict that's ever occurred has been between people with hands.
