It's the root of many conflicts throughout history. Certainly not all. Scarcity accounts for most conflict. Wars have many roots, but horrific violence and genocide almost require an ideological element as justification. When God wills it you can justify almost anything.

Soviets. Ideology. Ideology is the problem. For a long time religion has been an ideology. I'm not going to demonize religion. I think for the majority of the world it fills and important role. It's done a lot of good. That doesn't make it blameless.
