Okay. This is going to be unpleasant, for me and for you, but I have to get it out there. It's important to me; in fact, it just became (only temporarily, happily) the most important thing I have confronting me right now. Sorry.

There is a video game that someone has made which is a terrible, horrible, thing, and it has now entered my world and I must deal with it. The game is, apparently, actually pretty good as a game. Its *existence* is what is terrible and horrible.

I must stress, and will do so only once, that I in no way want to prevent this game from existing. I don't want it banned. I don't want it demonized and demolished by the gaming press. I want its developer to gain whatever success he may find on its own merits with its audience.

"Enough, Eddie. Cut to the chase. What's the game?" Yandere Simulator The more savvy among you are either nodding your head or rolling your eyes. The more fortunate among you are puzzled, vaguely curious, and clicking on Google. Let me save you some time.

YS is a game in which you play a psychopathic anime high school girl. Gameplay consists of psychologically manipulating, emotionally tormenting, physically torturing, and creatively and savagely murdering other anime high school girls.

It's a "yandere" simulator because "yandere" is a trope found in (some) anime and manga, a sweet and loving person whose devotion to the object of their affection becomes violent and destructive. "Psycho Girlfriend" is a trope in western media too, of course.

This is a game intended for mature audiences. The developer makes that clear right up front. It has an 18+ rating from PEGI. The developer expects it will be rated "M" ("Mature, 17+") by the ESRB (the game is under development and not yet rated).

Okay, so what, big deal. Not my kinda game, but I can see it as kinda funny, in a twisted way, and I'm all in favor of dark humor. I wouldn't play but I'm amused that the game exists. What gives, Eddie? What gives is that this game's biggest audience is girls aged 11 to 15.

Like any game these days, it gained a following because youtubers stream it, and kids watch youtubers. And there's something about tricking, manipulating, and murdering your social rivals that appeals to young girls. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
