Are there any Great Necessary Novels that are 200 pages? Maybe, but I can't think of any, at least in the SF genre, that are that small. Greatness requires elbow room.https://twitter.com/wastelandJD/status/1172310211341586433 …

The Door Into Summer (159), and The Puppet Masters (175) by Heinlein; The Time Machine (141), by H.G. Wells, The Stainless Steel Rat (160) by Harry Harrison. Those are the examples I found in a quick survey of my shelf.

Lots of classical pulp is that short and nevertheless excellent - Louis L'Amour, Ian Fleming, and others. Too often, modern practice is to write long bloviating epics that would benefit greatly by ruthless editing of a third or more of the material.

Compare Heinlein's uncut juveniles to the original edited versions. The editor cut out some good material, true, but the original ruthlessly edited versions are - in my opinion - better.

I always thought Stephen King's novellas were higher quality than the novels because of the tightness. Many disagree with me but I got tired of Neal Stephenson bc his novels have gotten longer and longer but without additional content.
