Remember when almost all websites had comments - back before the Cathedral realized that this let people disagree with The Narrative in public, and risk creating a preference cascade? Wild to think that the era of free communication was barely ten years ago.

In a sense, though, it just evolved so that twitter and reddit became the internet's universal comment sections.
Post a link to the article you want to discuss and everyone can talk about it.
Hence they're working to exercise full control of those sites too.
