The year is winding down here at the farm. Most of the projects and investments that are going to get done in 2019 are either down or are rapping up. A few things remain: * kitchen stove project * contractor to fence in the orchard * maybe pay a forester to do a logging plan

/ to some of the projects. This year I'm laboriously poisoning all of the Japanese knotweed in what will become cider orchard. I can't wait to, next year, cut down some crappy trees, brushhog some brambles, and then rototill that whole 1/4 acre plot.

/ In general, one should not rototill knotweed. It spreads via the rhizomes (meaty roots), and cutting and spreading rhizomes is a TERRIBLE idea. ...except, in this case: * glyphosate will have killed off most of the rhizomes (say, 98%) * by breaking roots & loosing soil >

/ When the 2% of the roots that aren't poisoned start to spring forth new demon weed next year, it'll be much easier to pull those bits out by hand and dispose of them.

/ Also very excited to rework road pasture, a ~ 1.5 acre area that's got a massive poison ivy infestation. It was fenced in 2 or 3 years ago, and farm hands cleared a ton of crappy saplings out. There was no grass under the saplings, just a bit of poison ivy, & with more light

/ ...and sheep selectively eating grass but NOT poison ivy, we've gotten darwinian selection. Pasture is kinda crappy. Planning a MASSIVE project there. Till everything under, etc. Really bouncing with excitement to tackle it.
