very weird defense of group think / single consensus (RTed via @greatdismal, @amendlocke ) Personally I think that more IT -> more partitioning of the consensus is a GOOD thing Different cultures is GOOD Exit is GOOD Aren't we told by our betters that diversity is strength?https://twitter.com/MCSpaceCadet/status/1167130412453285888 …

Yes. We (tech optimists circa late 80s) thought the internet would enable better decision making for society. Turns out it actually enables more effective partitioning of consensus reality, with potentially disastrous impact on collective survival. #truthisnotabubble

2/ > Science is not diverse in outcomes We wouldn't have the replication crisis if that were true > Diversity of belief in science's validity causes social weakness 1) evidence for this assertion pls? 2) I don't grant that "social weakness" is badhttps://twitter.com/MCSpaceCadet/status/1167205710846779393 …

Diversity is strength... until it involves the outright denial of consensus reality. Science is not diverse in its outcomes (though it must be in its process) -- that is what makes it science. Diversity of belief in science's validity causes social weakness, not strength.

3/ > Diversity is strength... until it involves the outright denial of consensus reality I find it interesting you are not upset at people denying TRUTH, but at denying CONSENSUS. 🤔 If I assert intelligence is very heritable (true, but anti-consensus) is that good or bad?

4/ If I were a citizen of the Soviet Union in 1950 and denied the * consensus * scientific assertion that Lysenokism was true, would that be bad, because I'm undercutting the consensus reality?

5/ You're moving goal posts. Your initial tweet said IT enabling lots of opinions was bad because it denied consensus reality...without regard to whether the consensus is correct or not. Now you're ret-conning that to "possibility of consensus". Odd. 🤔https://twitter.com/MCSpaceCadet/status/1167213426654863360?s=19 …

It did not. It denied the *current consensus*. It did *not* deny the *possibility of consensus.* That's the threat of culture that considers consensus irrelevant or, worse, innately fake.

1/"Consensus reality" is an odd phrase in defending or praising science. There is quite a bit of diversity of outcome from the Ptolemy paradigm to the current one. Rob wants to protect the current paradigm.
