can someone explain to me if I got the point of bevels (in e.g. axes) right?pic.twitter.com/5VlMAymMfH
what you're showing is, to some degree, a graphic of "hollow ground" (i.e. concave), which is an artifact of grinding on a wheel which has a radius < infinity too busy at work now but if you care a ton and want an engineering approach I recommend this https://www.tauntonstore.com/the-complete-guide-to-sharpening-leonard-lee-070256.html …
so in trying to draw a bevel I jumped forward a century and accidentally drew concave cheeks!
one huge reason for bevels is simply that to resharpen, you only need to grind a short distance back to planar, not a long distance let me gimp...
this is a cross section of a blade imagine a chip on or near the edge (zoom in) red is material you need to grind away to restore the old profile THAT'S TOO MUCH METAL !!! too much workpic.twitter.com/ypxFjlXwNZ
here, with a bevel notice the material that must be removed is much lesspic.twitter.com/1eed80b9qV
finally, force required on the knife or axe or whatever scales with the width of the blade - the amount of displacement. So thin is good. ...but a thin tippy-tippy edge will fold over or crumble or crack more easily. So a bevel gives you a thin blade but a stronger tip
and finally, this can be iterated YOUR BEVEL CAN HAVE A BEVEL (this is called a secondary bevel)
