Occasional reminder that if you want people to have conversations with you, it needs to be pleasant to have conversations with you. Otherwise you're shooting for a muting.

I don't know why you felt the need to tag him since I just as much as said I have him muted but he was being obnoxious and completely ignoring the actual point I made to begin with, and when I reiterated said point he just said "fuck that".

still don't understand how the at sign in the message did anything to effect you. You've muted him, right? And I think he follows you and me both. So the "@" sign literally didn't do anything.

@ ing someone puts a message into their notifications tab. I don't know about you but I treat my notifications tab as higher priority and read all of it, whereas I only sometimes read all of my timeline.
