On a first take, it's astonishing how fast the field of xenobiology/astrobiology has filled up with raving superstitionists. On a second take, it's entirely predictable: a 'science' with almost no data (so far) is a paradise for the parasites who've hollowed out academia.

also, when you're trying to take over a "stack", you always jump for the high levels. Not only is theory easier to do than calculating orbits and pyroclastic flows, it lets you take all of the output from those people and use it as your inputs. "actually I'm a META-THEORETICIAN"

back in MA I was on a town mailing list (just outside of Cambridge) and one Harvard grad student / assistant prof was trying a status move where she was pulling rank on every practicing engineer because she was a "fascinated student on the online blah blah blah" cc

and it's a really interesting rhetorical maneuver - you, a peasant, shovel dirt and plant corn. I, a theoretician of land-use, a student of the rural economy, etc blah blah blah am IMPLICITLY working at a higher level than you. It's hard not to fall into the frame once enunciated
