talking with friends the other day about the Yellowstone Caldera going up and now I think that 6-12 months of food in the basement is wildly insufficient good thing I'm broke right now or I'd do something crazy today

Maybe the Mormons have the right idea with ~3yrs of food. OTOH, if it’s Yellowstone, most of that half of the country will be gone anyway.

It's a year of food and many just go with 6 months, but the idea is sound

If you’re laying in provisions, might as well lay in with the tools to provide for yourself also. If you haven’t already. Fishing is something I’ve been thinking about.

There's the core flaw in any "bug out" scenario. Most expect to just live off the land, shooting squirrels & deer as needed. There won't be. Nearly everything that moves, after a SHTF/TEOTWAWKI event, will be killed for food within days. Fauna will take decades to recover.

concur hell, I don't even want to be growing food in year #2 anyone who survives the first winter is going to be HUNGRY better to live off of basement supplies one additional year, and THEN return above ground

which means that in a sufficiently bad SHTF/TEOTWAWKI event, I'd be inclined to move the livestock into the house's basement for an entire year ...as terrible as that would be. but ... a guy with a starving family would be crazy not to raid my barn at night and take livestock

Plenty of low trust societies do exactly that, bring them out for forage as long as they’re under guard and all.
