Too late, my week started hours ago, but thanks for this, it helps.

Nice, I started early at a mostly empty shop (lots of vacations this week). I’ve already made (and drank) a pot of coffee, and some replacement part clamps. While more of those are running, I’m touching up sloppy machining on a muzzle break I got a good deal on.

> replacement part clamps. tangent: I always try to improve my shop or my organization with every project I do, and I got annoyed by my woodworking pipe clamps rotating on the threaded pipe end ; think I'm going to add a small tack weld on each

That would work, or a jam nut if you foresee the need to remove it ever. Are those the threaded pipe variety?

Sorry, I see you mentioned they are, NPT taper or straight?

NPT taper pipe clamps use standard black iron pipe screw entirely onto thread of pipe, leaving no thread exposed for a jam nut https://www.amazon.com/PONY-50-Clamp-Fixture-Black/dp/B0000224C9/ref=asc_df_B0000224C9/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=309763890402&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=5882593202314671659&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9002346&hvtargid=pla-525078656041&psc=1 …

Yeah, taper doesn’t allow for much, even if there were thread, you’d lose thread engagement clamping down on it. Tack weld is probably best assuming the weld sticks to the cast, or you could drill and pin it.

this was the first thing I needed to investigate: is black iron pipe cast iron or not? I've - against advice - tried to MIG cast, and it is - LIKE THEY TELL YOU - not a good idea. Other plan is to cross drill through clamp and pipe and tap in a roll pin (or, hell, a nail...)

Malleable low carbon steel usually, and cast is kind of hit or miss with welding. Grain structure, graphite content, ambient temperature, etc., all come into play.
