Finally got around to reading the old Ringworld RPG
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ringworld_(role-playing_game) …
that @LibertyFarmNH got me for my birthday.
Really enjoying it. The thing I like most about RPG sourcebooks is that they lay out a fictional world in encyclopedia format.

2/ One thing is making me a bit sad, tho: realizing that the SF landscape of Heinlein juveniles (I'm also reading the new Heinlein biography), Niven hard SF novels, etc is sliding over the horizon. Landscape now is built out of Harry Potter, Hidden Figures, Scalzi, and movies.

3/ The socialcon / Catholic defeatist attitude [ towards worldly things! ] serves me well, though: OF COURSE there was a golden age, of course it is ending, of course everything mortal dies and rots.

5/ Anyway, speaking of both RPGs and hard SF: I remain quite excited to write the Aristillus RPG some day. Someone clued me in that there's an open source clone of the Traveller rules http://wiki.travellerrpg.com/Cepheus_Engine and I look forward to making AriRPG compatible with that, d20 >>>

6/ plus also rolling my own RPG rules / engine. I'm thinking of making the rules modular, so that a top level of modularity you can plug in d20, Cepheus Engine, or TJIC-engine ...and within TJIC-engine there are m variants of character gen, n of combat rules, etc.

7/ So, of course, there's a n x m x ... set of possible rule sets. So to describe a given rule set you'd need to, oh, I dunno, use a hex code, much like Traveller does for characters, planets ... :P

9/ I love GURPS. So spergy! ...but it's copyrighted, and it's not clear exactly how close to the border of their IP one could dance before running into trouble. >>>https://twitter.com/Isegoria/status/1157292723650609152 …

10/ On the one hand, I think one could / should be able to say "use GURPS base rules plus Hi Tech, and then forbid Ambidextrous, Drug Resistant, blah blah". On the other hand ... do SJ's lawyers agree with me? And on the gripping hand how much am I willing to pay to learn?

11/ He might very well, but (a) I do things my own way, (b) I don't like coordinating with other people, (c) I don't like splitting royalties, (d) SJ is not buying third party GURPS source material, and has not done so in decades, IIRC.https://twitter.com/Isegoria/status/1157293639753752582 …
