I'm urban and deal with landscapers, same issue. "Please stop running over the sprinkler heads with the lawn mower" BRRT...there goes another. Again.

I think it's also smaller families. As a kid, my siblings & I were at Grandparents farm, working most weekends. I was one of 18 Grandkids. The older cousins' spouses were pressed into service as well. I'd also posit divorce cuts out sons-in-law that might otherwise help.

4th iteration of the farmhand at the folk's farm sounds like one of your stories (lied constantly + stole fuel.) Yeah, talk to rural folks, labor is hard. Hardest part of the owner/operator equation. Every farmer looks at automation with the same gleam in his eye.

One problem is that kids 'think' it's cool to work on a farm, but then they have to do the work. Twice before I've tried to manage a large garden with two other guys. Ended up doing all the work while they ate my tomatoes and got high.

This is the scenario I envision playing out when the city hippies talk about how great it would be to start a commune in the forest

Vineyard owner here. I have acquired the habit of always asking farmhands to repeat back to me the instructions I just gave them. Always ensure I have made myself 200% clear. They still often find a way to do everything wrong.

Help is really hard to find because wages haven’t risen. Wages haven’t risen... probably in part because undocumented workers accept lower pay. The two things are related, not opposites. I want more immigration of all kinds, but the contribution to low wages seems clear.
