I only have this to say about “His Dark Materials:” no matter one’s place on the religion/irreligion scale, I think all can admit that if you write almost three books building up your dimension-cutting knife as a god-killer and then don’t use it to kill god, you’ve written trash.

It really felt like the story that he started gradually grew distorted and warped until by the end it wasn’t even recognizable. I think John C Wright accurately described it as Pullman forcing his muse to play the harlot.
