My black 4th grade teacher was very nice, but I remember one time someone asked her why we needed to learn geometry and she said “Because someday an astronaut might find a triangle in space”.

Seems like geography is relevant. SW US, teachers are more likely latino... in much of HS, I only had 1 "white" teacher, and she demanded that science fiction wasn't literature [big mistake to a 14yr old]... so, y'know.
