I'm sorry, but this is nonsense. Part of what makes books like The Martian or @MorlockP 's Powers of the Earth compelling is plausibility. You can't make a science fiction story feel real without being scientifically accurate.https://twitter.com/DaddyWarpig/status/1148807466072674306 …

What distinguishes SF from other fiction isn’t science, but technology. “Hard science” is about as relevant to quality SF as realistic horse defecation is to quality Fantasy. Occasionally it may matter in some specific story, but overall it isn’t necessary.

Case in point - I read a #milscifi story in which an orbiting spaceship is blown up and therefore plummets to the planet below, betraying the author's complete lack of understanding of orbital mechanics. Ruined the whole book for me. Good science + good story = good #scifi.

There’s a board game I almost can’t play anymore because its movement system is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of how interplanetary travel works. (It is NOT easier to travel toward the stellar mass than away from it if you’re already orbiting it!)

The nuclear scuttling charges in the PK ships in Aristillus 2 were there bc I'd done math re the conclusion of Ari 2 and knew the energy requirements.

Star Wars is myth, but they still managed to ruin it by violating their own rules. Midichlorians, Leia flying through space, etc. Consistency and integration is the important thing.

The worst was the Holdo kamikaze at the end of TLJ. It removed any in-universe excuse for not having space combat consist almost solely of throwing FTL asteroids at each other.
