2/ I do not blame people for using WD40 as a lubricant. WD40 advertises itself as a lubricant. But Trix advertises itself as "part of a healthy breakfast". Also, do not use WD40 to break loose stuck screws. Use a 50/50 mixture of acetone and Automatic Transmission Fluid.

3/ Home Shop Machinist magazine ran a pretty good test 10 or 15 years back comparing several commercial products (WD40, Break Free, Liquid Wrench) and found that acetone/ATF beat them all. I keep a 99 cent spray bottle from Target full of it handy in my shop.

my favorite lubricant is lithium grease. i use it on old lenses.
