fwiw I struggle to write fiction and although I'd like to be a morning person, I often get the most work done in the afternoon and evening

treating writing as an act to be motivated by the muses is a recipe to failure, IMO. writing is a job.

agreed. I've gotten _much_ better at writing on demand, through onerous practice. I still have a hard time being creative or brilliant on demand, so I frantically take notes when that happens and I'm not actively writing

I think that being creative or brilliant happens 1 time out of 100 that you roll the dice. You can't change the ratio, but you can throw the dice more often.
