yep I'd like to restructure our criminal justice system so that 99% of problems are solved with some mix of * restitution * whipping * exile https://t.co/nkt2skEWN4
I find whipping far less cruel than imprisonment. Were I offered the choice, I'd choose to be whipped.

The courts seem to have ruled against you on this one. And a whipping may seem less fearsome to those who have not experienced it, like you and I.

But we're comparing it to being kept caged for months on end amongst a bunch of other anti-social, possibly dangerous prisoners, with extremely low quality food and accommodations and no chance to visit your family or friends. Whipping at least gets it over with quickly.

Depending on the severity of the "whipping", this might be one of the few times I seriously disagree with you. Assuming it's Singapore's variety, it's usually the most feared part of a punishment. Even the bullwhip variety was no joke as a punishment in naval tradition.

It can be calibrated to be very painful but not disabling. Whipping / caning / whatever. There's some solution in that space which creates a serious disincentive to crime, but which does not destroy lives like 1 / 2 / 5 / 20 years of incarceration.
