GP You can't contract legally until you're 18, Morlock. Different discussion. Hell, I don't think people who don't pay taxes/own land should get to vote on spending/taxing issues.

All of that, but also throw in a side of "the lender has a responsibility to make loans that are likely to be repaid or they too are acting irresponsibly".

GP Agreed. But if the unsecured debt cannot be discharged in bankruptcy (which is a tremendously stupid limitation), then lenders are behaving rationally. It's nearly as secure as real estate backed lending. At least up to a certain dollar amount.
