Thesis: Parties exist to expand the N of people who will do the right thing from just those who will do it for its own sake to the much larger set of people who will do it to make their enemies cry. 1/2

Each party unifies population A, who will rejoice in a few policy victories for their own sake, with populations B-F, whose policy victories population A will tolerate because those victories will, in common with population A's victories, make population A's enemies cry.

If you want consistent theory, then I agree that centrist Dem partisans / centrist GOP partisans are unlikely to be where one would find it. I was trying to articulate that internal coherence isn't necessary for parties, only the coherence lent by a common enemy's disapproval

You might find more coherent theory in leftist critics of the Dems, who draw together ecology/socialism/anti-imperialism into a relatively consistent whole.

It might be that the incoherence of center-left doctrine stems from the fact that leftist theory requires discomfiture of many entrenched interests, which is politically very challenging; it may be attempts to (pre-)compromise with those interests that gives rise to incoherence.

I agree with this theory. Evolution says that the parties best able to mobilize votes survive. Both parties are amoral survival monsters.

This is especially true under constraints that entrench a party duopoly (CF: Massachusetts electoral law, Bill Galvin). Under other constraints, it would be easier for 3rd parties to gain traction & hive members off the two big sprawling amoral coalitions.

sure, but that doesn't create more justice - it just posits an evolutionary paradigm with lateral transmission of DNA https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horizontal_gene_transfer …
