Now that he's made that thread, there's a non-zero chance that somebody is going to devote their lives and resources to getting extraplanetary civilization working in large part 'to prove that arrogant SOB Hugh Howey wrong."

He might be right that we could improve life on earth so that nobody will *want* to leave anymore. But that 'prediction' just seems to go against history and much of what we know of human psychology. And as argued in some good sci-fi novels, government screws it up always.
