2/ The solution to the LQ is clearly Urbit. Your own personal cloud bulb. Because it's totally crash proof / deterministic, it can never get into an inconsistent state, and never needs to be rebooted. I'm not even convinced that I'm joking.

I designed the electrical (and network/comms) plan for my new house. There is one, ONE!, non-mechanical device going into it, and only because my wife disliked the looks of the timer I wanted.

Good robust mechanical stuff, though surprisingly, mechanical timers don’t hold up as well as digital. Digital is either work/not work, mechanical sometimes adds random variation.
