5/ My thesis is that everyone has crippling doubt about their choices. "Am I an idiot for living in the city? The rent is so high, I'm a nobody lost in a crowd of millions and I'll never be discovered / make it". <Tribal anthem plays> Ah, I'm PART OF SOMETHING BIGGER!

6/ "Am I left behind by the modern economy? Am I a nobody in the middle of nowhere?" <tribal anthem plays> Ah, the dirt is red, the women wear jeans, there's football on Friday night, I'm part of something bigger!

Luckily, people such as you and I know that there is nothing exceptional about us at all.

joke noted and chuckled at but srs tho, the fact that there is no custom designed "you're part of the tribe" anthem JUST FOR US is evidence that we're not even big enough to make faux culture feasible.

you know the last psychiatrist, and his/her "if you're watching it, it's for you" ? this is the inverse - if you're not watching it, then "you" is singular, not plural

There are plenty of anthems (and posts and cartoons and videos) out there to celebrate the awesomeness of our tribe, and every time I run across one I take a couple of steps backwards away from the tribe.

well, i suppose there's emergent culture, or used to be, and manufactured culture. the latter delivers a definite feeling of being marketed at, and certainly makes me take a few steps back, too.

part of the issue is that the market is so highly evolved that any time there's an emergent culture the marketers sense a heat delta they can run a dollar engine off of, show up, and "improve" it https://meaningness.com/geeks-mops-sociopaths … cc

also, there's something "seeing like a state" about how the sociopaths move in. They have templates, they know how to monetize X and Y and Z ... but not Q. So Q gets dropped, and F (also monetizable) gets added. Does your subculture have collectible figurines? IT WILL !

Yes, absolutely! ...does your Hate Up have challenge coins and t shirts? IT WILL!

THE ONLY WAY TO KEEP THE MARKETING SOCIOPATHS OUT IS TO FILL THE ECOLOGICAL NICHE BEFORE THEY ARRIVE!
