But..they are on a building tear that should not be discounted. They essentially have 3 navies. And their backyard happens to be the center of global population and one of the centers of world economy. They also view themselves as in an existential political fight with us

As for US abilities, we have major problems, but the real paper tigers are the European states, they have really, really hollowed out. It's debatable that the UK could pull off a save of the Falklands today (though Arg has a much weaker military also).

i think england and france are the only other countries beside the US who could possibly project any force farther than their front porches, and they can't project much.

Yes, UK really declined under Cameron, tho. French are really good at doing small cutting out force projections (kind of more with less), especially in Africa. They're really good

They have the twin of that of being unable to be democratic. At an international meeting last week, the Chinese representatives gave a few stemwinders that were basically "our way or the highway" & essentially that those island they took were theirs all along & stop complaining

I mean, I think they are the root of their own undoing (and always are). They restrict their own human capital, even more so now. Xi has upset what had been a stable oligarchy by giving himself more time; this will become destablizing. They've become rushed, long game is out
