First time I ever encountered the word was in middle school. We were reading Penrod, it's used there. Which is when I learned about various names over the years and how they all became racist in a rolling entemology. That never did make sense.

The newest edition of Penrod scrubs it. I was pissed to learn they did that. But at the time, it was really weird to learn it wasn't about the word, because each new label would "wear out" and need replacing, and they even reused one!

I never interacted with a black person till college, and I don't remember seeing them till then though I probably did. First time I encountered the concept was Egyptian History with the Nubians. My mom explained as "people with black colored skin".
