A good point weakened by a bad title. 122 years is not “three centuries” just because it overlaps a couple of arbitrary boundaries (1900 and 2000).

this is a silly NDT-level point it doesn't matter if the century boundaries are arbitrary or not; given that they exist in our culture, they are relevant

OTOH, if i told you i was 3 centuries old, would you think i meant 300 years, or, say, 102?

old" changes it, a TON if I told you "I was in Denver for 3 days", you would presume that I had arrived some time in day 1 and left some time in day 3, for an average expected duration of 48 hours

if I later revealed that I'd arrived at noon on day 1 and left on noon on day 3, you'd say "yep, just as I guessed". If I instead said "arrived at 11:30 pm on day 1, left at 2am on day 3" you'd say "well...borderline, but, yes, fair."

Contra that for periods of human time greater than one day, the day is the natural unit. "Three weeks" doesn't imply 14 days. Your example is down to rounding in the LSU.

it changes it some, i admit. even in your example, you're in denver for a full 2 days worth of time over the three days, not one and a few hours.

all hinges on how you interpret the "of" in "three centuries of", I think. to me it does imply 300 yrs bc "three centuries of work" reads as a measure, analogously to e.g. "three liters of water", but ymmv

it's a species of the "rounding" error intrinsic to mapping continuous to discrete domains. I can position an object a tiny bit over 1cm long on a ruler such that it covers two ruler ticks & it'll still be much less than 2cm long
